Understanding Smart Load Management with TBB Hybrid Inverters: What’s AC Output 1 vs AC Output 2?
This built-in feature allows you to easily separate your critical loads from your luxury loads, giving you more control over your power use, especially during winter or high-demand periods.
Two Outputs, Two Priorities.
Every TBB hybrid inverter we sell includes:
- AC Output 1 (Normal Loads): Always prioritised. Always powered.
- AC Output 2 (Smart Loads): Intelligent, programmable, and automatically controlled.
This diagram shows how 'Normal Loads' (AC Output 1) and 'Smart Loads' (AC Output 2) are connected. Use AC Output 1 for critical appliances, and Smart Port for non-essential or high-load devices that can be interrupted when battery is low.
What Goes on AC Output 1 (Normal Loads)?
We recommend wiring your essential appliances into AC Output 1. These are the things you always want running no matter the weather, time of day, or battery state of charge.
Some examples include:
- Fridge/freezer
- Lighting
- Internet router
- Water pump (for shower or taps)
- Phone and device chargers
- Monitoring systems
What Goes on AC Output 2 (Smart Port)?
AC Output 2 is the Smart Port, and it's designed to help you automatically disconnect non-essential or high-load appliances when battery levels are low, preserving energy for your critical loads.
It’s fully programmable based on battery state of charge (SOC), solar conditions, or time of day. Set it to disconnect at 60% SOC and reconnect at 85%, for example. No manual switching required.
Great examples of smart loads include:
- Heat pumps / electric heaters
- EV chargers
- Spas / hot tubs
- Big power tools (e.g. welders, compressors)
- Dishwashers / washing machines
- Electric ovens
- Pool pumps
- Dehumidifiers
Built-In AGS for Generator Automation.
The TBB Matrix II models also include a programmable relay with Auto Generator Start (AGS). This feature allows your generator to automatically start or stop based on system load, battery voltage/SOC, or time settings. Ensuring you never run out of power while minimising unnecessary generator use.
Why Smart Load Management Matters.
Separating your critical and smart loads helps you:
- Protect your essentials
- Preserve battery life
- Reduce generator runtime
- Maximise use of solar energy
- Improve system efficiency and resilience
No Add-ons Needed.
The Smart Port and AGS are built into every TBB hybrid inverter we offer. No external relays, contactors, or third-party controllers required. You can configure them directly through the unit or via the TBB NOVA monitoring platform.
