Dreaming of more space, warmer weather, and a slower lifestyle, Morgan and Jessica left suburban Wellington for a bare acre in Waipu. During one of their first nights on the land with just a cabin and caravan, the 2020 lockdown was announced and they were forced to isolate with no power, no water, and a portaloo toilet that could not be serviced.
"I think the best part of being off-grid and having solar is just the freedom. Both the financial and physical freedom to do what we want and that we can share this with our family. Our minimal footprint on the earth and just be who we want to be– and hopefully be an inspiration to others to live this kind of life. It is possible. You can do it."

The freedom of living off-grid and being self sufficient has always appealed to me. Moving back to NZ we wanted to live in Waitakere but didn’t want to rent so putting a tiny house on the family farm solved that.
