Q+A: What Does Grid Free Mean and How to Go off the Grid with Solar

Taking short breaks from the city on the weekends, escaping the city rent trap, or starting to build a life on family land—when it comes to answering the question "what does grid free mean", it depends on the person answering the question. Others want to get back in touch with nature and themselves, or prefer living apart from society on their own terms.

In 2018, when we started GridFree, we knew right off the bat that the name needed to offer the prospect of not being connected to the power grid but we found any name we tried with “off-grid” felt like a put-off. We wanted to convey the freedom of the off-grid lifestyle—and that’s how GridFree came about.

For us, it’s the core of our business and our name, and GridFree means the possibility of not having to rely on the grid to live a good life. From weekenders to start-overs, we aim to make learning how to go off the grid with solar easy.

When you ask "what does grid free mean", you might really be asking, "what does off-grid mean". Everyone interprets the meaning of living "off-grid" differently - some people take it very far, to mean a life with no internet or not relying on the government for anything as much as possible. Most of our customers tend to relate to its more technical meaning, to simply not being connected to the power grid, or any utilities, water, or waste too. Some see being off-the-grid as having the freedom to do things your own way.

The same way that "gridfree" and "off-the-grid" have different meanings, the lifestyle can be what you want it to be. You can have all the comforts of home and pay more for it with a more powerful solar power kit or you can compromise and give up certain things to live a very cheap, easy, low impact lifestyle. Going off-the-grid can mean what you want. If you’re ready to make the leap, let us show you how to go off the grid with solar and start living the life you want.
