When people first approach us we often get the questions: “What size solar setup do I need for my home?” "What size solar kit do I need, my house is 3 bedrooms?" "What size solar kit do I need, my house is 70m2?"
It’s a great question, this is the general rule of thumb we follow for recommending our systems:
But the fact is, sizing your off-grid solar package isn’t about the size of your home or how many bedrooms you have. It’s all about how much energy you use and how you use it.

Step 1: Understand What Sizing Really Means
When we talk about “sizing” an off-grid solar package, we’re really talking about matching your energy consumption to a system that can meet your needs, both in sunshine and in cloudy weather.
To figure that out you use GridFree’s Off-Grid Solar Calculator, which does the maths for you. Start by listing all your appliances, such as your fridge, washing machine, lights, and devices. Then note the appliance wattage (W) which you can usually find on a sticker.

Now note down how many hours per day the appliance runs (err on the side of higher use). Once you have added in all of your appliances the calculator will give an estimated daily energy use (Wh). Our calculator will also match you with one of our packages that best suits your energy needs.

Step 2: Think About Your Lifestyle
Energy use isn’t just about what you own, it’s about how you live.
Here are a few key questions to help you find your best solar fit:
-
How conservative do you want to be with your power?
Are you happy to keep an eye on your usage and avoid high-demand days?
Or would you prefer to live as if you’re still on the grid, with plenty of power to spare? -
How much do you want to learn about solar?
Some people love checking their system and learning how it all works. Others prefer a “set and forget” approach. Your comfort level can influence how much automation or battery capacity you’ll want. -
How flexible is your lifestyle?
If you can plan around sunny days, doing laundry or charging devices when solar is abundant, you can get by with a smaller setup. But if your schedule’s set in stone, a bigger system provides more flexibility. -
How many high-draw appliances do you have?
Things like electric ovens, heaters, and pumps can quickly add up. Consider which of these you truly need to run off solar. -
Are you open to gas or alternative energy for heating and cooking?
Many off-gridders choose to keep water heating and cooking separate from their solar system. Gas, wood, or even a seperate solar water heating can make a big difference to your system size and cost.
Step 3: Find Your Balance
The goal is to find the sweet spot between comfort, cost, and control. If you’re happy to adapt to the weather and use energy wisely, you can go smaller. If you want to live without compromise, go for a larger package with more panels and battery storage.
Every off-grid setup is unique, and that’s part of the beauty. It’s about designing energy around your life.
